Also called the purple pitcher plant, this species produces stout, tubby pitchers that turn deep purple in heavy sunlight. Unlike other American pitcher plants, purple pitcher plants collect rain water rather than producing their own digestive juices. Purple pitcher plants have lower light requirements than other pitcher plants, and also maintain their pitchers through their dormant season.
